EPA Focuses on Healthy Schools in Time for Earth Day

Kicking off the month that people celebrate Earth Day, school administrators, teachers and parents may be interested to obtain a newly released federal brochure that provides guidelines for environmental health and safety in schools.

The booklet, called “Healthy Schools," lessons for a clean educational environment” was developed by the New England regional office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It provides an easy-to-read guide for administrators, educators and parents looking at ways to make sure local school buildings provide a healthy learning environment.

“Across the country, more than 53 million children and six million adults spend their days in our elementary and secondary schools.”

- Robert Varney, regional administrator EPA’s New England office

“Reducing environmental risks inside these buildings is critical for public health and for our children to get the education they need.”

The brochures include sections on indoor air quality issues, such as mold, asthma, and radon; toxics; drinking water; outdoor air quality issues such as UV rays and diesel buses; oil storage and how to make schools green.

Restroom Odor and What to do About It
Restroom odor can be the source of many complaints and unhappy customers. Below are some simple techniques that may reduce those complaints—almost instantly!

1. Make sure the restroom is cleaned thoroughly and on a consistent basis.

2. Always use clean water when mopping the floors. If you allow the mop bucket to become dirty, you will be mopping dirt back onto the floor.

3. Make sure all bathroom fixtures are cleaned thoroughly. Common areas often missed by housekeepers include under the urinals, the bottom (base) of the commode, corners of the floor behind the commodes and the air vents and ducts.

4. Keep air vents clean to insure that the air circulation is clean and odor-free.

5. Odor control products work well but will work much better if the restroom is being cleaned correctly from the start. Odor control products include: urinal screen blocks, rim sticks, wall units that automatically dispense scented aerosols as well as time-released odor-control dispensers.

6. If odor persists, remove the floor drain and clean it thoroughly. Then pour a half-gallon of water mixed with a scented neutral cleaner down the floor drain.
